So, after one puddle jumper, two flights, with a three hour delay in Toronto's Pearson Airport, one missed landing in La Guardia, and fourteen hours later, hello New York City, I'm here. Luckily I was greeted in the wee hours of the morning by a kind friend and colleague whom I hadn't seen if about ten years, and she hasn't changed a bit in that time, and that's just gravy! Internationally acclaimed sculptor Cal Lane, I'm here, wa'cha got for me? It was dark and a torrential down pour when we arrived to the making grounds of Lane, so I couldn't make out much, but when I woke, this is what I found. As we sipped freshly roasted (literally roasted moments before brewing) coffee bean elixir and life juice of my hosts concoctionery we walked the grounds and had a little shop-talk.
Cal Lane, oxy-acetylene torch and plasma cutter extraordinaire, sculptor and manipulator of steel, drawing master, maquette maker, printed matter in the expanded field producer, or would it be sculpture in the expanded field? Or both? Regardless, interdisciplinary wonder woman I'm here; to learn, conceptualize, fabricate, de-fabricate, buff, grind, flame cut, weld, or whatever else it is I can do for you, use me up!
After a little exploring and some rough laying of plans we set off for my Air B 'n' B located a few short train stops away in Ossining, along the Hudson River. I got my bearings over the weekend, picked up a mixed bag of culinary wonders from a few of the Bodega Style Mexican Grocers located in the area and got ready for today, Monday, the first day of work and the beginning of my apprenticeship with sculptor Cal Lane. Details of today to come tomorrow, I'm a little wiped and in need of some rest.
Be well all,
Bertski
